I was born in India where I grew up in a very loving home. Having come from a privileged background with servants, I never even had to make a cup of tea, but had always been interested in cooking, writing poems and helping others. From the young age of nine, instead of playing with friends, I preferred to watch my mother and grandmother prepare their many delicious dishes. After graduating from college and majoring in child psychology, I moved the United States in the early seventies. Realizing now just how important learning to cook had become to me, I began my self-taught lessons. Through burning many pots and pans in this endeavor, I have never failed to judge as a creative and compassionate cook. |
After many years of cooking experience, my culinary contributions have appeared in a number of publications including Gourmet Magazine. I also have achieved a high public profile throughout Ocean County, New Jersey, where I now reside with my husband. I have taught cooking classes in the Toms River Adult School, in addition to sharing many cultural programs with the Ocean County Library System. I was chosen "Cook Of the Month" by the Asbury Park Press in May 1990 and have been featured on a number of local cable television programs. I have written four cook books and test all my recipes on my family and friends. I also enjoy writing music, poetry, gardening and entertaining.
"COOKING WITH BELA (Discovering The Flavors Of India)" is my fourth book and like all the others filled with many flavorful recipes. The eight chapters of this book, over 200 recipes, thoroughly cover appetizers, soups, vegetables, breads, desserts, main dishes and miscellaneous. The recipes are designed to be healthy, simple, flexible, and creative.
My personal touch provides a pleasant break between recipes with a selection of my own composed poems. |

COOKING WITH BELA

A few years ago I survived a near fatal car crash. It was shortly there after I came to realize even more; that material things count little where as helping others rewards endlessly. I believe that writing, gardening and helping others can heal many wounds, and learned through near death that life is not always promised. It is the individual meeting the challenge, which makes the dream come true.
